Meditation and Mindfulness

Meditation is a practice that involves training your mind to focus on a single object. This object can be the breath, the body, the mind, a mantra, a candle flame ect.. This is why so many different mediation practices exist, the object of meditation can be anything! While simple in concept, meditation is quite difficult for most in practice. Our minds desire to be constantly moving, switching from one thought to the next and to the next ect... Meditation teaches us that we have the ability to quite the mind and focus. It also teaches us to be aware of our thoughts, for it is inevitable that our minds will eventually pull us out of our focus with a random thought. Each time that this occurs and we become lost in thought, we will eventually become aware of the fact that we are lost in thought and are no longer meditating, when this happens we are training our internal awareness of thoughts occurring in our mind. This helps identify our thoughts outside of meditation more readily. If you are struggling with negative or anxious thoughts, you will be able to recognize yourself having these thoughts more quickly, which then allows you the opportunity to redirect yourself to more positive or rational thoughts.

Mindfulness is the practice of being intensely aware of what you're sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgement. It is my belief that mindfulness is the strongest single coping skill an individual can learn. With it you will be able to understand your emotions, what trigger them and who you are. Mastering mindfulness will free you as a person.
